The Japanese Generic Medicines Association (JGA) is composed of Marketing Authorization Holders of generic medicines in the country. The JGA has been active in the development of the generic medicine industry since it’s establishment in 1965.
The JGA became a full member of the International Generic Pharmaceutical Alliance (IGPA) in 2007, and since has become even more active in promoting and developing sustainable universal health care through the use of generic medicines.
In an era where medical demand is rising due to rapidly aging populations, all stakeholders recognize the importance of generic medicine in providing efficient, sustainable medical care and the promotion of generic medicine has assumed increasing importance.
Due to this demand, several new measures promoting generic medicines have been introduced by the Japanese government since 2002. As a consequence, as of March 2013, generic medicines have achieved a mid 40% range market share (by volume). Subsequently, in April 2013,the government issued The Roadmap for Further Promotion of Generic Medicine Use , setting a new target of 60% market share (by volume) by the end of March 2018.
Our association and member companies continue to strive for stability of supply, reliability and high quality of products, and the effective provision of product information, as outlined in The Roadmap for Further Promotion of Generic Medicine Use for generic medicine manufacturers.
I look forward to your continued understanding and support,
Japan Generic Medicines Association
